How will I be assessed?

Independent study is an essential part of our VTCT and Professional Vocational Qualifications and you will be required to complete both practical and theoretical assignments at home. Observation Assessments will take place onsite during the course and a Portfolio of Evidence will be completed. Competent performance of Observation outcomes must be demonstrated on a specified number of occasions.

Unit assessment methods:

Portfolio of Evidence, Written Assignments, Case Studies, Practical Elements/Final Assessments and Written Exams.

Cost Includes:

Registration, Record of Assessment Book, Course Materials, Certificate and Assessment Fees.

About This Course

The Award in Education and Training is the threshold qualification for anyone wanting to teach in a wide range of contexts including the further education and skills sector, workplace learning, offender learning and adult and community settings. The VTCT Level 3 Award in Education and Training will enable the learner to enter teaching employment and progress onto a broader teaching qualification.

The following mandatory units are included:

  • UET1 Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
  • UET2 Understanding and using inclusive teaching and learning approaches in education and training
  • UET5 Understanding assessment in education and training

This award is designed to equip a wide range of teachers/trainers and facilitators with the requisite skills and knowledge required to fulfill a teaching role. During this course you will learn about preparation, planning and basic course design. You will also gain teaching delivery skills and participate in microteaching sessions.

Evaluation skills and techniques also form part of the course content.

This qualification provides a sound introduction to teaching/training and is suitable for both experienced practitioners who would like to secure a professionally recognised qualification as well as those new to teaching. The VTCT Level 3 Award in Education and Training will enable you to work in a teaching role and progress on to a broader teaching qualification.

Units in this qualification have been mapped to the relevant NOS (where applicable).

This qualification is regulated on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

CPPD points: 20

Prerequisite: There are no formal prerequisite qualifications that you must have prior to undertaking this qualification. It is recommended that you have a level of general education comparable to GCSEs. You should be committed to fulfilling the Theory Elements. You must meet the required Guided Learning Hours (GLH) by working through the Theory Elements, taking part in online discussions, assessments and reviews with your tutor and assessor via our Virtual Learning Environment. Optional Interactive Practical sessions can be accessed by attending our centre.

Duration: This qualification can be completed in a minimum of 3 months, on average it takes 6 months to complete the theory elements.

Course Delivery: Theory elements are covered online in your own home, in your own time and at your own pace via self study using our Virtual Learning Environment. This qualification is perfectly suited to online delivery because the subject is wholly theoretical therefore the subject can be delivered and learning assessed online. You will be fully supported by your course tutor who’s role it is to help and guide you through the process from beginning to end. Both your tutor and assessor will ensure that you not only reach your goals but maintain industry and awarding body standards. You will also have access to our private Facebook group where you can communicate with other learners and graduates.

Although this qualification, as we have said is perfectly suited to online delivery the subject can be brought to life in a classroom envirnment which enhances the learning experience. Therefore Optional Interactive Classroom sessions can be accessed by attending sessions at our centre over a period of 3 days or 2 hours per week, evenings or weekends for 9 weeks with our tutor Joanne Lee.

Virtual Learning Resource: Upon enrolment you will be able to login and access your course content. Simply progress through each section and lecture, complete all your written assignments and upload them to your VTCT e-portfolio. You will receive seperate login details for your VTCT e-portfolio 2 weeks after enrollment.

Upon completion you will be required to attend our Assessment centre here in Dukinfield, Greater Manchester to deliver a Micro Teach session as your final assessment.

Minimum System Requirement: As this course is delivered via our online Virtual Learning Resource there are some minimum system requirements including:

  • Laptop, PC or MAC
  • Broadband internet connectionnimum Software Requirements
  • Browsers IE9, IE10, IE11, Firefox, Safari or Chrome
  • Adobe PDF Reader
  • Adobe Flash Player
  • Microsoft Word (or equivalent)

Micro Teach: You should be involved in at least one hour of microteaching. You must deliver at least one 15 minute microteaching session which should be observed and assessed by a member of the delivery team. For the additional 45 minutes, you can either deliver additional microteaching sessions or observe the microteaching sessions of other learners.

Upon completion of both practical and theory elements, assessments and written papers a VTCT Level 3 Award in Education and Training (QCF) will be awarded.


Additional information: All necessary materials and equipment will be provided for use during the practical elements and for final assessments however you will be required to ensure that you have the necessary materials and equipment to continue and complete this qualification.

Progression: On completion of this qualification you may choose to undertake further study; qualifications you could progress to include:

  • VTCT Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (QCF)

You can progress from the VTCT Level 3 Award in Education and Training (QCF) directly into a teaching or facilitating role in the further education sector.
